Route and border crossings
The Nairobi–Moyale highway is fully paved and the Moyale One Stop Border Post handles customs for both countries. Ethiopia is not an EAC member, so cargo moves through Kenya under a transit bond and is declared to Ethiopian Customs Commission at Moyale. From Moyale the route continues through Hawassa to Addis Ababa, a further 780 km.

Transit time and what affects it
Typical transit from Mombasa to Addis Ababa is 8–12 days from port release to delivery. The main variables are the time of customs release in Mombasa, weighbridge queues on the Kenyan leg, processing at Moyale and the delivery window at the consignee. Tarazad tracks every truck by GPS and shares status updates at each milestone, so you know where the cargo is at all times.
Cargo and truck options
The lane is used for Ethiopian imports when Djibouti capacity is constrained, for southern Ethiopia deliveries, and for project cargo to Hawassa and Addis Ababa industrial parks. Return loads are limited, which affects pricing compared with EAC lanes.
Full truckload is available in 10-tonne, 20-tonne and 30-tonne units plus skeletal trailers for 20-foot and 40-foot containers. Smaller consignments can move as less-than-truckload on scheduled departures. See full truckload, less-than-truckload and customs clearance.
